Description |
Telegraph key set. Handwritten note included: "Given in memory of Byron L. McMillan These telegraph "keys" and "sounders" are typical equipment of the early 1900's. A telegraph operator would buy his own key and take from job to job, whenever a change of location was required. His key had a special "feel" to him that just any other key wouldn't have. A key could last a telegraph operator his entire working life if properly cared for! The un-mounted key is a "Western Union Telegraph Company" key. It could have served 50 - 60 years before being retired. It has been factory laquered [sic] to prevent tarnishing. The big key and sounder has connection diagram on the bottom of the unit. A standard pair of "D" cell batteries could be used to make this unit work. I tested it and it still works after 80 - 90 years of use. Yours, Charles McMillan 703-753-9030 P.O.
